Uesugi Shrine

Uesugi Shrine is situated in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and is a shrine dedicated to Uesugi Kenshin, a famous military commander from the Warring States period. It is also one of the most prominent sightseeing spots in Yonezawa. Uesugi Kenshin was a prominent daimyo during Japan's Warring States period, originally nicknamed “Torachiyo” and later known as Nagao Kagetora as an adult. He demonstrated remarkable military leadership, earning him the posthumous title “Dragon of Echigo,” commonly referred to as a God of War, and he was widely respected for his sense of justice. In 1578, Uesugi Kenshin suddenly passed away at Kasugayama Castle in Echigo. His remains were initially buried at the Fujisawa An in the castle according to Buddhist rites. In 1601, when his successor, Uesugi Kagekatsu, relocated to the Yonezawa Domain, he also moved Kenshin’s shrine to Yonezawa.

Uesugi Shrine is located within Matsugasaki Park (the former site of Yonezawa Castle). The original main hall was destroyed in a fire during the Taisho era. In 1923, it was rebuilt based on designs by Dr. Chuta Ito, the renowned architect who also designed Meiji Jingu and Heian Jingu Shrines. In addition to the main hall, the park also features the Uesugi Memorial Hall, statues of Uesugi Kenshin and Uesugi Harunobu, along with other historically significant structures. Visitors strolling through the park can immerse themselves in a deep sense of historical significance.
