Yamagata City is located in the central-eastern part of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and serves as the prefectural capital and largest city of Yamagata. The city developed as a town in the mid-15th century and boasts stunning natural scenery with Mount Zao to the east and Mount Yudono to the west, making it an exceptional tourist destination.

Yamagata City has a long history and profound culture. Its abundant natural resources endow it with distinct seasons, all of which are a joy to experience. Kasumi Castle Park is a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing and preserves the moat and stone walls of the former Yamagata Castle, evoking images of the castle’s construction in its heyday. Additionally, the city is home to Western-style brick buildings such as the Bunshokan, designed in the English Renaissance style, and the Yamagata Educational Museum, designated as an important national cultural property. In the northeastern part of the city lies Risshaku-ji Temple, said to have been established in 860 and counted among the most renowned temples in the Tohoku region. The temple is surrounded by Mount Hōju, covered with lush ancient trees, and within its vast grounds are various halls and pagodas, including the Konponchudo Hall, along with rock caves and unusual rock formations shaped by wind erosion.

The Hanagasa Festival is Yamagata City’s most famous event, held annually from August 5 to 7 along the Jizou-machi to Nanoka-machi streets over three consecutive days. It is a major summer celebration in the city, attracting over one million participants each year who dance in beautiful kimonos. Other highlights worth seeing include the safflower festival in summer, the imo-jochi (boiled sweet potato) festival in autumn, and the fireworks display.
