The Frontier Wall Fortress

The Frontier Wall Fortress in Datong, Shanxi Province, was built during the Ming Dynasty to defend against invasions from the Mongols. The five fortresses are Zhenbian Fort, Zhenchuan Fort, Hongci Fort, Zhenlu Fort, and Zhenhe Fort. They are located along the Great Wall more than 50 li northwest of Datong Prefecture, with each fortress about 25 li apart.

Zhenbian Fort borders Yanggao County to the east, with a fortress perimeter of 1 kilometer; Zhenchuan Fort connects to the Sixteenth Beacon Tower of Zhenbian Fort to the east, also with a fortress perimeter of 1 kilometer; Hongci Fort connects to the Nineteenth Beacon Tower of Zhenchuan Fort to the east, with a fortress perimeter of 1.5 kilometers; Zhenlu Fort connects to the Fifteenth Beacon Tower of Hongci Fort to the east;

Zhenhe Fort connects to the Twentieth Beacon Tower of Zhenlu Fort to the east.
