Tsuruoka City

Tsuruoka City is located in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, along the Sea of Japan. It was established on October 1, 1924, as Japan’s 100th city. The city has the second-largest population in Yamagata Prefecture, after Yamagata City. Thanks to its proximity to the Sea of Japan, Tsuruoka boasts several naturally well-endowed beaches that are very popular among both residents and visitors.

The most famous mountain in Tsuruoka is Mount Haguro, which stands at 414 meters tall and is home to the Dewa Shrine. Within the mountain, visitors can see a national treasure—the Five-Story Pagoda, a structure with a wooden shingle roof and untreated wood material. Near the mountain’s summit lies the Sanjin Gosaiden Hall, a site where three mountains are enshrined together. Its thatched roof is 28 meters thick, and the interior is entirely decorated with lacquerwork, making it quite a sight to behold. In addition, the area offers numerous museums, cultural centers, hot springs, and an aquarium that are also well worth visiting.
