Sakata City

Sakata City is a city located in the northwest of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. It ranks as the third most populous city in the prefecture and serves as the central urban area of northern Shōnai Region, as well as an important port city within Yamagata Prefecture. The city was established in 1933, and in 2005, the towns of Hirata, Matsuyama, and Hachiyama from Higashitagawa District were merged into Sakata, forming the new Sakata City. The movie “Departures” was filmed in Sakata City.

Sakata City boasts numerous cultural and natural attractions, including art museums, memorial halls, nature parks, resort villages, shrines, beaches, and hot springs. The Soma Building, located in the city center of Sakata in Yamagata Prefecture, northeastern Japan, was originally a representative high-class restaurant in Sakata during the Edo period and was designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 1996. The Sakata City Museum extensively collects materials related to Sakata’s history, folklore, industry, economy, maritime activities, culture, nature, and local characteristics. It permanently exhibits historical and folk materials, as well as those related to the historic fires in Sakata, and also hosts exhibitions themed around the city’s history, folklore, and culture. The Sakata City Art Museum is built on a hilly site with views of Mount Chōkai, the Mogami River, and the city streets. The museum displays a rich variety of works by local artists.

In addition, other worthwhile sites include Kaihō Temple, Hiyoriyama Park, Asahiyama Castle Ruins, Yamasen Nature Park, Hachiman Shrine, Matsuyama Castle Site, Yamasen Hot Spring, Kobayashi Hot Spring, Matsuyama Hot Spring, Hyūgagawa Hot Spring, Miyami Beach, and Tobi Island Beach.
