Qingciyao Site (Second Batch of Provincial-Level Protected Sites)

Location: West of Qingciyao Village, Yungang Town, Western Suburbs of Datong City

The Qingciyao Site is distributed along the rear edge of the second-level terrace on the north bank of the Shili River. Discovered in the 1970s, it was excavated in the early 1980s by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Datong Municipal Bureau of Culture, and the Datong Museum. The excavation uncovered more than 1,000 Paleolithic stone artifacts and a collection of animal fossils. Stone tools include stone hammers, chisels, scrapers, and points, while the animal fossils belong to eight species such as Equus sanmeniensis, antelope, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, and Capra ibex. The site dates back approximately 100,000 years, provisionally assigned to the later part of the Middle Pleistocene and classified as belonging to the later phase of the Early Paleolithic.
