Leilei Gorge

Leilei Gorge is a scenic spot located in Akiu Town, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It was primarily formed by the erosion of the Natori-gawa River and is one of the most famous sightseeing destinations in Sendai. It also serves as a great place for Sendai residents to enjoy natural beauty and engage in outdoor activities. Its name was given in 1931 by Komiya Toyotaka, a disciple of the renowned Japanese writer Natsume Sōseki and an honorary professor at Tohoku University.

The Natori-gawa River flows through towering rocks, slicing between steep cliffs like a sharp sword, and has intricately carved the rugged stone formations into various shapes. This results in a dramatic landscape filled with oddly shaped boulders that give the feeling of massive rocks pressing down from above. Walking downstream along the river, there is a specially built walking trail for visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the valley up close. Leilei Gorge is home to many rare plants, and in summer, it is lush and green with cool river water, making it a great spot for playing in the water. In autumn, the area is covered with red leaves that attract many visitors. In winter, the valley is blanketed in snow, making it a wonderful destination for enjoying snowy landscapes.
