Osaki Hachimangu Shrine

Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is the guardian shrine of the Sendai Domain and a national treasure of Japan. It was built in 1607 by Date Masamune and features the ishi-no-ma-zukuri architectural style (a type of shrine architecture where there is an intermediate hall between the worship hall and the main hall), making it a grand and magnificent structure — one of Japan's most renowned shrines.

The main hall of Osaki Hachimangu Shrine is predominantly black-lacquered and adorned with dazzlingly brilliant metal fittings, presenting a richly colorful and luxurious atmosphere that is considered a masterpiece of Momoyama-period architecture. In 2004, after approximately five years of restoration work, the shrine buildings were reopened to the public, restoring their original grandeur and splendor from the time of their founding. The shrine grounds are filled with the fragrance of flowers and birdsong, exuding a deep cultural ambiance. Numerous important festivals are held here every year, creating a lively atmosphere. Especially on January 14th, during the “Pine Burning Festival” (designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Sendai City), many people gather at Osaki Hachimangu to burn the pine branches that decorated the shrine’s entrance at the beginning of the year and old amulets, praying for good health, freedom from disaster, prosperous business, and happiness in the new year.
