Sendai Castle

Sendai Castle is a hirayama-style castle located in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Because it sits atop Aoba Mountain, it is often poetically referred to as "Aoba Castle." It was built by Date Masamune in the early Edo period and was dismantled following the Meiji government's "abolition of the han system and establishment of the prefecture system" decree. After undergoing multiple reconstructions and restorations, it has become a symbol of Sendai City and a famous tourist destination in Miyagi Prefecture.

The main keep of Sendai Castle once stood on a natural fortress at an elevation of 115 meters. Although it no longer exists, the remaining stone walls and reconstructed yagura (corner turret) evoke a strong sense of history, allowing visitors to imagine its former glory. Standing before the statue of Masamune on horseback inspires a grand perspective on modern Sendai, much like Masamune’s ambition to unify the nation. Today, the castle site has been developed into Aoba Park. From the inner citadel ruins, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Sendai City and the Pacific Ocean. The park is also richly planted with various flowers, trees, and greenery, offering a beautiful and relaxing environment.
