Iwate Park is located in the hilly area where the Kitakami River and Nakatsu River meet in Morioka, the capital city of Iwate Prefecture in Japan’s northeastern Tohoku region. It is an urban park built on the site of the former Morioka Castle ruins, which is why it is often referred to as the “Morioka Castle Site Park.”

Designed to reflect the characteristics of the former Morioka Castle, Iwate Park features lush greenery and classic historic charm throughout, making it one of Japan’s most beautiful urban parks. The park is planted with a wide variety of trees and flowers, including about 200 cherry blossom trees that bloom vibrantly in spring, filling the air with fragrance. Every year from late April to early May, the park hosts the “Morioka Cherry Blossom Festival,” celebrating its cherry blossoms and warmly welcoming visitors from all over the world. In the evenings during the festival, many paper lanterns are lit across the park, casting a magical glow on the blossoms.
