Cherry Blossom Festival at Kitakami Shōshōen: A Scenic Ride Through Blooming Beauty
As the cherry blossom front moves into Japan’s Tohoku region, the wild and expansive beauty of spring blossoms begins to unfold. Iwate Prefecture’s Kitakami Shōshōen, one of the nation’s top 100 cherry blossom spots, is known together with Akita Prefecture’s Kakunodate and Aomori Prefecture’s Hirosaki as one of the “Three Great Cherry Blossom Sites of Mutsu.” The park features a stunning 1-kilometer-long cherry blossom tunnel, sightseeing boats and ferries gliding along the Kitakami River, and 300 carp-shaped streamers fluttering in the air, creating an incredibly magnificent scene.

The name “Shōshōen” means “scenic viewpoint” or “place of celebrated scenery.” Spanning approximately 293 hectares, Kitakami Shōshōen Park in Iwate Prefecture is planted with around 10,000 Somei Yoshino and wild cherry trees. From mid-April to early May each year, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, painting the landscape with pink and white hues in a breathtaking sea of flowers. During the blooming season, visitors can stroll through or take a horse-drawn carriage ride along the long tree-lined paths leading toward the riverbank. Walking beneath the intertwined branches, you’ll feel the gentle touch of low-hanging blossoms drifting past, offering endless beauty.
During the Cherry Blossom Festival, not only are horse-drawn carriages available for rent along the blossom-lined paths, but pleasure boats also cruise the Kitakami River. The carriages are delightfully charming, featuring red canopies and driven by attendants in traditional attire, accompanied by the jingling of bells. The riverboats include replicas of Edo-period Tenjinmaru sailboats, giving visitors a taste of traditional cherry blossom viewing from centuries past. In addition to admiring the blossoms, you can also enjoy performances of the traditional folk dance “Oni Kenbai.” The area around Shōshōen Park also houses museums, a folk village, and memorial halls worth visiting.
