Kitano Ijinkan
Introduction
“Kitano Ijinkan” – During the Meiji period of opening up, Kobe was a settlement for foreigners, leaving behind a large group of 19th-century Western-style buildings that are highly distinctive and collectively known as “Ijinkan.”
The most famous among them are the “Kazamidori-kan” and the “Moegi-no-kan”: the richly European-flavored “Kazamidori-kan” gets its name from the “wind dowel” (weather vane in the shape of a rooster) standing atop its triangular roof. It stands out amid Japan’s traditional color tones, further highlighting its exquisite ornamentation and the graceful curves of its architecture.
