Nankinmachi

Nankinmachi

Nankinmachi is the colloquial name for a narrow area located between Motomachi-dori and Sakuragicho-dori in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. It is also a registered trademark of the Nankinmachi Shopping Street Promotion Association. It is a Chinatown rich in Chinese flavor, and together with Yokohama Chinatown and Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, it is counted as one of Japan’s three major Chinatowns.

Since the opening of Kobe Port, Nankinmachi has undergone 140 years of dramatic change. Within an area approximately 200 meters wide from east to west and 110 meters long from north to south, more than 100 shops have gathered, including Chinese restaurants, Chinese food stores, and variety shops. The area is bustling with people every day. The entire street is decorated with Chinese-style colors dominated by red, blue, yellow, green, and gold, and each shop also hangs Chinese-style lanterns, filling the air with a strong Chinese atmosphere. Especially during the Lunar New Year, performances such as dragon and lion dances are held on the streets, and everyone’s face is filled with festive joy. There are also many shops selling snacks and pastries along the road, and it's common to see visitors walking, eating, and sightseeing.
