Kobe Maritime Museum

The Kobe Maritime Museum was established in April 1987 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Kobe’s port opening. Located in Meriken Park in Kobe’s Chūō Ward, the museum centers on the themes of “sea, ship, and port.” It is one of the few large-scale maritime museums in the world and also one of Kobe’s most iconic structures.

The exterior of the Kobe Maritime Museum features a design resembling waves and sails, with an overall white framework that harmonizes perfectly with the museum’s theme. The museum includes three exhibition spaces—on the first floor, second floor, and outdoors—offering a comprehensive introduction to the development history of Kobe Port as well as information and knowledge about the ocean and maritime affairs. Modern visual media further bring these displays to life, leaving a deeper impression on visitors. In the outdoor exhibition area, various ships from both the East and West, spanning ancient times to the present, are displayed. Observing these vessels allows visitors to feel as if they have traveled back in time to experience the characteristics of ships from different eras.

The Kobe Maritime Museum is located near other renowned Kobe attractions such as the Kobe Port Tower and Mount Rokkō. At night, the museum lights up in green, complementing the red hue of the Port Tower, creating a stunning view that frequently appears in travel brochures.
