Chi Jin Tin Hau Temple is one of the oldest buildings in the Kaohsiung area. It was built in the 12th year of the Kangxi reign (1691) and is dedicated to Mazu, with its main festival held annually on the 23rd day of the third lunar month. The legend of the temple originates from Fujian fisherman Xu Ahua, who encountered a sudden typhoon while fishing at sea, putting both his life and boat in danger. Fortunately, Mazu appeared and protected him, allowing him to safely survive the peril. After the storm, his fishing boat drifted to Chihou in Kaohsiung. Upon returning home, he invited fellow villagers and their families to settle here, bringing along the Mazu statue from Meizhou.

Lin Mo, also known as Mo Niang, is affectionately called “Auntie,” “Mother Goddess,” or “Mazu” by the public. She was from Putian.

Born on the 23rd day of the third lunar month in the first year of the Jianlong reign of the Song Dynasty (960), Lin Mo came from an official family on Meizhou Isle in Putian County. She never cried from birth until she was one month old, which is why she was named “Mo” (meaning silence) and also called “Mo Niang.” Her great-grandfather Baoji served under the Zhou Dynasty as a military commander but later resigned and secluded himself on Meizhou. Her grandfather Fu inherited the family’s honors and served as the Fujian Regional Commander. Her father Yuan worked as a coastal patrol inspector in Fujian during the early Song Dynasty.
