Tianliao Devil's Land

Tianliao Devil's Land is a unique landscape characterized by sharp, jagged ridges. It is located in the Chongde and Guting villages of Tianliao District and Ruishan Village of Neimen District, north of Kaohsiung City, bordering Tainan County along the Erren River. The terrain features a low-lying valley at its center, surrounded mostly by exposed, sawtooth-like ridges that are sharply pointed and where trees do not easily grow.

Originally, the area now known as Devil's Land was a hilly region covered by around 2 to 10 meters of gravelly or silty debris overlying mudstone. Later, as the land rose and the Erren River eroded the area, the debris layer was gradually cut away and washed off, exposing the underlying mudstone. Additionally, since rainfall in this region is concentrated in the months of June, July, and August—mostly brought by southwest monsoons and typhoons—the fine-grained, loosely cemented, and low-permeability mudstone is easily washed away, forming mudflows and causing slope collapses. This ultimately resulted in the distinctive Devil's Land landscape of sharp ridges and sparse vegetation seen today.

Although vegetation is scarce in Devil's Land, the landscape becomes strikingly beautiful under the moonlight, reflecting on the calm river surface like a cold palace in the sky. Especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival, when the moonlight is hazy, it serves as one of the best spots for moon viewing.
