Zigui Forest Recreation Area

Zigui Forest Recreation Area is located in Baoshan Village, Taoyuan District, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. It is managed by the Pingtung Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau, covering an area of 770 hectares with an elevation ranging between 1,550 and 1,804 meters. Surrounded by mountains and covered in lush forests, the area boasts picturesque scenery and pleasant landscapes. Climbing to the observation deck at 1,804 meters above sea level offers panoramic views of Yushan, Dabu Mountain, Beinan Mountain, as well as Greater and Lesser Guan Mountains, making it an excellent destination for hiking, walking, flower viewing, and birdwatching.

The Zigui Forest Recreation Area is home to a variety of plants including cedar, maple, two-leaf pine, plum, and cherry blossoms. These plants present different appearances throughout the seasons, offering ever-changing and delightful scenery. In addition, there are approximately 403 hectares of natural broad-leaved forest, which is one of the most well-preserved natural broad-leaved forest ecosystems within Taiwan’s forest recreation areas, earning it the reputation since ancient times as the “Little Xitou of Southern Taiwan.”

With an average annual temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, the area experiences its rainy season from May to September and has foggy days for about 180 days of the year. The small temperature variation and cool climate make it an ideal summer retreat. The months from January to April and October to December are perfect for forest bathing, hiking, admiring tree-covered landscapes, watching sunrises, and birdwatching. It is also an outstanding site for nature and ecology education.
