Nam Van Garden

Introduction

Nam Van Garden is located in front of the Garrison Fort of Ka Sai Kok, near the Hotel Lisboa, and is also known as Ka Sai Kok Garden. The garden is divided into upper and lower sections: the lower section lies between Nam Van Street and Ka Lok Tong Street; the upper section is further split into two levels, connected by stone steps, and is situated between Ka Lok Tong Street, the incline near the garrison, Ka Sai Kok New Road, and Avenida da Penha. The upper part of Nam Van Garden sits at the foot of Penha Hill and features a rather unique cylindrical building that is two stories high — the Memorial to the Fallen Soldiers of World War I, which commemorates the Portuguese soldiers who died in the First World War. The exterior of the memorial has arched windows and doors, with patterned reliefs on the walls and a crown-shaped ornament at the top that is quite eye-catching. It is now repurposed as an association for people with disabilities.
