Introduction

Puji Chan Temple, also known as Guanyin Hall, is one of the three major Buddhist temples in Macau. Built in the late Ming Dynasty, it has a history of approximately 360 years. With its grand scale and long-standing heritage, the temple extends deep into three courtyards and spans several connected buildings. It was once the site where the Sino-American Treaty of Wangxia was signed. The Mahavira Hall faces the temple directly, majestic and imposing, enshrining three precious statues of the Three Jewels Buddha, all over eighteen feet tall with magnificent, robust forms — one of them being Sakyamuni Buddha. The main hall enshrines Guanyin; the statue of the Goddess of Mercy stands on a lotus base carved from camphorwood. The Eighteen Arhats are arranged on both sides of the main hall, exquisitely crafted with lifelike features. Guanyin Hall is the principal hall of the temple.
