Dr. Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park

Originally named Avenida do Canal dos Patos Park and commonly referred to as Sun Yat-sen Park, Dr. Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park is a multifunctional park located next to the Portas do Cerco in Macau. Situated near the Portas do Cerco in the northern part of the Macau Peninsula, it covers a total area of approximately 570,000 square meters, making it the largest park in Macau. The park was established to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who once lived in Macau, and is named after him, with a full-body bronze statue of the statesman erected at the park entrance.

The landscape design of Dr. Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park blends traditional and modern elements. The northeastern part features a classical Chinese garden design, including an artificial lake, zigzag bridges, pavilions, and small towers, while the southwestern section showcases a modern layout with sports facilities and greenhouses. As you enter the park, you’ll see a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, founding father of the Republic of China, who resided in Macau for a period. This park is named in his honor.

At the center of the park lies a covered corridor approximately 500 meters long, covered with climbing plants. Walking along the corridor leads visitors to various attractions within the park, such as rest areas, a children’s playground, a multipurpose sports field, and a small open-air theater near the lake. The sculpture “The Eternal Shake Hands” is situated in Dr. Sun Yat-sen Municipal Park. This steel-cast artwork weighs 4 tons and cost 3 million patacas to create. Its designer and sculptor, Lau Kwai-bing, explained that it symbolizes 400 years of witness to the friendly relations between China and Portugal, as well as mutual understanding among the people of Macau, with the handshake representing the enduring friendship between the two cultures.
