Temple of the Northern Emperor

Introduction

Macau is home to numerous temples, but among them, only one is solely dedicated to the Supreme Deity of the North – the Temple of the Northern Emperor in Taipa. Located at Rua do Regedor / Largo da Camões in Taipa, it is commonly referred to by locals as “Largo do Templo do Deus do Norte” (Northern Emperor Temple Square), named after its location.

The temple presents an overall solemn and majestic appearance. Its main gate features not only colorful murals painted on the beams and arches but also exquisitely carved decorations, all finely crafted with vivid and lifelike designs. The couplet on both sides of the gate reads: “The Northern Pivot commands awe, guarding the Dragon Ring and Three Sands, revered for divine virtue; the Supreme Seat showers grace over the fishing harbor, its boundless merits praised by the four seas.” This couplet praises the achievements of the Northern Emperor. It’s worth noting that the term “Dragon Ring” mentioned in the couplet, along with the ancient iron bell inside the temple inscribed with the name “Tan Tsai” (another old name for Taipa), both refer to what Taipa was called over two hundred years ago. 1. Border Gate (Portas do Cerco): Visitors can take Bus No. 34 directly from the Border Gate and get off at Rua do Regedor in Taipa, then walk for 5–10 minutes to reach the temple. 2. Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal: Visitors can take Bus Nos. 3A, 28B, 32, or AP1 from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, transfer to Bus No. 28A at Avenida da Amizade / Viaduto, and get off at Rua do Regedor in Taipa, then walk for 5–10 minutes to reach the temple.
