Introduction

Situated on Chapel of Our Lady of Grace Square, the Chapel of Our Lady of Grace was constructed in 1885 to accommodate the religious needs of Taipa’s Catholic congregation and also marked the arrival of the Portuguese in Taipa during that period. It is the only Catholic church on the island of Taipa. Harmonizing with the surrounding European-style gardens and houses, it has become a favored location for Macau residents to hold weddings and enjoy leisure outings. The church covers an area of over two thousand square feet, featuring a bell tower at the top. The main hall is tall and spacious, capable of accommodating more than two hundred worshippers for ceremonies. The altar houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, which is said to have been brought from Europe. On either side of the altar stand several-foot-tall angel statues with lifelike designs, erected in commemoration of the church’s centennial. Facing the sea with beautiful scenery, the church grounds include a garden planted with lush pines and cypresses, as well as stone pavilions and benches for visitors to rest, making it an ideal spot for summer retreats. Take buses 28A, 33, 34, 11, 15, 22, or 30 and get off at the Estrada do Cunha, Taipa Old Town stop. Alternatively, take buses 21A, 25, 26A, or AP1 and alight at the CEM Warehouse stop on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, then walk to the site.
