Mazu Culture Village

Introduction

The Mazu Culture Village is situated on Diaoshitang Hill in Coloane, Macau. It was invested in by the China Mazu Foundation of Macau with 200 million MOP, took three years to build, and was completed in 2003, covering an area of 6,200 square meters. Its main structures are the giant Mazu statue and the Tin Hau Temple. The Mazu statue was unveiled on October 28, 1998, at the highest point in Macau—Diaoshitang Hill on Coloane Island—where the world’s tallest Mazu statue was erected. Its designer was Liang Wanping, president of the China Painting Academy in Macau. The statue stands 19.99 meters tall, symbolizing Macau’s return to the motherland on December 20, 1999.

This Mazu statue is composed of 120 pieces of white marble inlaid together, with the face of Mazu carved from a single unbroken piece of white marble. The statue weighs over 500 tons, is pure white and gleaming, and bears a kind and gentle expression as it gazes out toward the sea of Macau, as if watching over the city with deep affection. Perched atop the highest point in Macau, it can be clearly seen from both the sea and the land. Since its consecration, the previously quiet peak of Coloane has become bustling with visitors and filled with incense. The dressing chamber on the upper floor of the rear hall of the Tin Hau Temple served as Mazu’s daily living quarters, and is an important part of the Tin Hau Temple architectural complex, as well as a necessary structure in large Mazu temple layouts. The dressing chamber is built in the style of ancient southern Fujian architecture—a two-story antique pavilion mainly constructed of stone and wood, covering an area of nearly 3,000 square feet. The China Mazu Foundation of Macau operates shuttle buses between the Shibaifang Parking Lot at the foot of Diaoshitang Hill in Coloane and the Tin Hau Temple Parking Lot, running every 30 minutes. The first and last bus departures from the Shibaifang Parking Lot are at 8:00 AM and 6:30 PM respectively, while those from the Tin Hau Temple Parking Lot are at 9:00 AM and 7:30 PM.

Lin Mo, also known as Momo Niang, is affectionately called “Auntie,” “Niangma,” or “Mazu” by the public. She was from Putian.

She was born on March 23, 960, during the first year of the Jianlong era of the Song Dynasty, into an official family on Meizhou Isle in Putian County. Until she was one month old, she never cried, hence she was named “Mo,” also called “Momo Niang.” Her great-grandfather Baoji served in the Zhou dynasty as a military commander but resigned from office and lived in seclusion on Meizhou. Her grandfather Fu inherited the family merit and served as the Fujian Commander. Her father Yuan was an official as the Fujian Patrol Inspector during the early Song Dynasty.
