Macao’s Our Lady of Hope Bay Wetland Ecological Observation Area

Macao’s Our Lady of Hope Bay Wetland Ecological Observation Area is located on the western side of the water bodies at Rua da Tercena in Taipa, covering an area of approximately 4,500 square meters. It is one of the important wetland ecological areas in Macao today and derives its name from its proximity to Avenida da Nossa Senhora da Esperança.

In November 2010, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau discovered that the reed field on the side near the road was being invaded by the alien species “Mikania micrantha,” one of the world’s top 100 most dangerous invasive species. In order to thoroughly address the affected areas, prevent its spread and impact on the overall ecological structure of Rua da Tercena, as well as to better optimize the landscape and enhance its ecological and tourism value, the bureau uprooted the invasive Mikania micrantha in December of the same year. It also excavated five interconnected ecological ponds of varying sizes along the side of Avenida da Nossa Senhora da Esperança and planted a variety of plants, including the lotus — a representative plant of Macao — as well as water lilies, Sagittaria lancifolia, Cyperus haspan, cattails, and Saururus chinensis, among other aquatic plants. Shrubs such as osmanthus, Lagerstroemia indica, and Allamanda cathartica were also planted for decoration, forming the prototype of the current ecological observation area. Various recreational facilities were added within the ecological observation area as well, such as log benches, shade umbrellas made from Rhaphidophora decursiva and Bougainvillea, and bamboo screens crafted from bamboo, allowing visitors to enjoy and experience nature’s sounds and scents while using naturally styled amenities to fully appreciate the outdoors.
