Olympic Garden Park

Olympic Garden Park (English: Olympic Garden) is located in the southern part of Kowloon City, Kowloon, Hong Kong, near the former Kai Tak Airport, and is the first place name in Hong Kong to be named after the Olympics. The park is situated within the Kowloon City Roundabout, with an overpass above it connecting Argyle Street to Prince Edward Road East (opened on April 25, 1972), where Prince Edward Road West, Argyle Street, and Ma Tau Chung Road all intersect.

The park does not feature many Olympic elements, with only flower beds decorated with the patterns of the Olympic rings and torch. The park is located near the former Kai Tak Airport and close to Sung Wong Toi Park. Since Kowloon City has many Thai shops and restaurants, a large number of Thai domestic helpers gather in Olympic Garden Park every Sunday, hence signs in the park are written in Chinese, English, and Thai.

In 1964, during the Summer Olympic Games, the Olympic flame was transported from Greece to the host city Tokyo, Japan. On its way, it passed through Hong Kong in August of the same year — marking the first time the Olympic flame had ever come to Hong Kong. To commemorate this event, the Hong Kong government named a roundabout park near Kai Tak Airport in Kowloon City as Olympic Garden Park, and also named the nearby street Olympic Road. The term “Olympic” used here was a colloquial name for the Olympic Games in Hong Kong at that time, and had no relation to the World Games. On November 26, 2012, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced that Olympic Garden would be closed from that date until December 30, 2016, to accommodate the construction of the Sha Tin to Central Link.
