Hong Kong Baptist University, abbreviated as HKBU, is a public university with a background in the Baptist Christian tradition. It aims for “whole-person education” as its educational goal and ideal, and its motto is “Diligence in Faith and Action.” In 2010, Times Higher Education ranked HKBU 111th in the world. According to the 2013 QS Asian University Rankings, HKBU was ranked 43rd among the best universities in Asia. In the 2012 QS World University Rankings, HKBU was ranked 271st globally. Meanwhile, the 2012 Times Higher Education ranked HKBU between 276th and 300th in the world, and 50th in Asia.

The predecessor of Hong Kong Baptist University was Hong Kong Baptist College, established in 1956. It was renamed Hong Kong Baptist College in 1972, with Dr. Lam Chi-fung as its first president. In its early days, the college only offered diploma programs in Foreign Literature, Sociology, Mathematics, Civil Engineering, and Business Administration. Starting in 1986, the college began to offer degree programs. In November 1994, the Legislative Council passed the relevant ordinance, and Hong Kong Baptist College was officially upgraded to a university, becoming one of the eight publicly funded higher education institutions in Hong Kong that receive support from the University Grants Committee and are authorized to confer degrees.

Currently, Hong Kong Baptist University comprises the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Administration, School of Chinese Medicine, School of Communication, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Academy of Visual Arts, and School of Continuing Education. Since its establishment, HKBU has continuously introduced a variety of innovative programs to meet the development needs of Hong Kong society. Notable examples include Communication Studies, Chinese Medicine, Social Work, Human Resource Management, and Politics and International Relations. The university has also pioneered programs in Hong Kong such as Chinese Studies, Health and Fitness Management, European Studies, Translation, and Humanities.

Hong Kong Baptist University is located in Kowloon Tong, Ngau Chi Wan, and Sha Tin. The campus is mainly divided into five parts: the Shaw Campus at 51 Waterloo Road on Penhill; the Yip Fai Campus at 8 Baptist University Road in Kowloon Tong; the Baptist University Road Campus also on Baptist University Road in Kowloon Tong; the Kai Tak Campus at the former Royal Air Force Officers' Club; and the Shatin (Shek Mun) Campus in Sha Tin, New Territories.
