In the 33rd year of Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s reign (214 BC), the Qin general Meng Tian drove the Xiongnu northward, reclaimed the land south of the Yellow River (now the northwestern part of the Yellow River loop), established 44 counties, built the Great Wall, set up barriers and outposts to defend against the Xiongnu, and constructed Hunhuai Barrier in what is now Pingluo County (near the Bingou Han Tombs).
