The Nanshan Ecological Tourism Area is located within a 30-kilometer radius south of Wuzhai County and serves as a major tourist destination in the region. “The mountains resemble sprouting reeds, while the plateaus unfold like lotus leaves” – this vividly captures the distinctive features of the Nanshan Scenic Area. The main peak, Luya Mountain, lies 20 kilometers from the county town and stands at an elevation of 2,739 meters. At its summit is the Prince’s Hall, which stands firmly atop the peak, making it the highest mountain in northwestern Shanxi. The area boasts attractions such as the Nine-Arch Ladder, Body-Hugging Gorge, White Cloud Cave, Small Ice Cave, and the Four-Seasons Glacier Valley. Towering trees and dense forests provide shade from the sun, making summers cool and earning it a reputation as a “cooling paradise” alongside Mount Wutai. Starting from the headwaters of the Qinglian River, passing through the verdant Luya Valley and heading west for 30 kilometers to Heyeping Plateau, you’ll find an elevation of 2,783 meters spread across 36,000 acres of land – resembling a vast, emerald-green lotus leaf. It is one of the rare subalpine meadows in North China, often praised as the “Jade of the Plateau.” Traveling 60 li northward along the Qinglian River from Luya Mountain and Heyeping Plateau toward the county town, you’ll pass a series of scenic spots including the Three Monkeys Teasing the Lion, Four-Seasons Glacier, small waterfalls, the Pearl-Returning Cave, Jade Seal Rock, Wind-Moving Rock, Hundred-Blessings Rock, Lovers’ Ridge, Nanfeng Reservoir, and Nanchan Temple. The entire Nanshan Tourism Area combines natural landscapes such as mountains, water, forests, rocks, grasslands, temples, and springs into one stunning panorama – a breathtaking harmony between scenery and people.
