The Guanmian Temple was restored and newly built in 1991, and renamed White Elephant Temple.

The name "White Elephant Temple" comes from a legend over 520 years ago. In the legend, four war elephants led by a white elephant carried part of the Si clan army, which had been defeated by the Ming Dynasty troops, to safety during a crisis. While fleeing, they crossed the Lancang River eastward together with the local Dai people along the eastern bank, eventually reaching the southern bank of the Nam Ma River where they camped overnight. The four war elephants refused to leave the place, so the Si clan army and the Dai people had to settle there. This area came to be known as "Yunyang" (White Dew City), now known as Mengmeng Town. The place name "Mengmeng" was later given by people to refer to the location where the white elephant was found.
