Manlei Pagoda

Manlei Pagoda is a cultural tourism attraction.

The pagoda is located on the mountaintop beside Manlei Village in the southeast of Mengzhe Basin, Menghai County, hence the name Manlei Pagoda. Mengzhe Basin is the largest basin in Xishuangbanna and also an important granary in the region. There are two pagodas, one large and one small—the larger one stands 20 meters tall, and the smaller one 15 meters tall. Both have square bases and octagonal bodies, with metal ornaments at their tops, and there are also two small Buddhist temples in between. Legend has it that the site of the smaller pagoda is where the Buddha's left bone relics were buried. Later, the Buddha’s spirit flew up from underground and landed nearby, so two more temples and a larger pagoda were built where the spirit descended. To the south of the pagoda grows a wild mango tree over 30 meters tall, which, according to legend, is as old as the smaller pagoda. Manlei Pagoda is one of the sacred worship sites for Theravada Buddhist followers in Xishuangbanna and is a popular destination for local Dai people and Buddhists for worship and sightseeing.
