The Former Residence of Chairman Mao Zedong in Changgang is a classic red tourism attraction.

Changgang Town is located in the southeast of Renhuai City, 37 kilometers from the city center. The former residence of Mao Zedong is situated behind the west side of the central street in Changgang Town, with a small alley leading directly to the main street in front. It is surrounded by residential houses on all sides. This residence is an important modern historical site and representative architecture, facing north and covering an area of 114 square meters. It is a courtyard house with a tiled roof, consisting of the main room, east and west wing rooms. The upper hall is three bays wide, with a total width of 8 meters and a depth of 8 meters. One of the east wing rooms remains, while the west wing room has been demolished.

According to the later account by Chen Changfeng, Mao Zedong’s guard at the time, and relevant historical research, the Central Military Commission received and dispatched a total of 17 telegrams and orders from comrades such as Zhu De, Lin Biao, and Nie Rongzhen here.

After the Zunyi Conference of the Central Committee, Chiang Kai-shek personally went to Chongqing to command operations. For three consecutive days, he dispatched a total of 28 planes to bomb the headquarters of the Military Commission. Two bombs were dropped—one hit the upper hall, breaking the ridge tiles at the back of the main hall and landing on the middle second room’s wooden beam without exploding. The other bomb landed in the courtyard but also failed to detonate.
