The Red Army Battle Site at Lubanchang

The Red Army Battle Site at Lubanchang is a cultural relics protection unit of Guizhou Province.

The Red Army Battle Site at Lubanchang in Renhuai City is located in Baijiao’ao Village, Huangjiatian Village, Luban Town, Renhuai City, Guizhou Province, about 400 meters from Renhuai No. 4 Middle School and Luban No. 2 Primary School.

On March 15, 1935, in order to crush the enemy's encirclement and achieve the goal of strategic relocation, the First, Third, and Fifth Red Armies engaged in fierce combat with the Second Column of the Nationalist Central Army, commanded by Zhou Hunyuan, which was entrenched in Lubanchang. The battle took place across Baijiao’ao, Tuaniao Temple, Liangshuijing, Laokengzui, Baiguo Temple, Dingjiashan, and Yangjiaoling. It started at 7:00 a.m. on March 15 and lasted until 10:00 p.m. that night. Charging through gunfire, the Red Army fought bravely against the enemy, eliminating over 400 enemy troops, shooting down one enemy plane, and destroying or occupying countless enemy bunkers, trenches, shelters, and obstacles. This engagement is historically known as the “Battle of Lubanchang.” The battle greatly intimidated the enemy and paved the way for the Red Army’s third crossing of the Chishui River, helping them break free from the enemy’s pursuit and encirclement. In September 2000, the Luban Town People's Government raised 100,000 yuan to build a sculpture commemorating the Red Army Battle Site at Lubanchang on a small hill at the eastern end of the southern street entrance of the town, along with a memorial monument.

The Red Army suffered significant casualties during the Battle of Lubanchang. In 1953, the Renhuai County People's Government constructed a martyrs' cemetery in Yanjiabao, Lubanchang, to centrally bury the remains of Red Army soldiers who died within the territory of Renhuai. It was rebuilt as a tomb with a memorial archway in 1967, expanded and renamed the Red Army Martyrs’ Cemetery in 1983, and a memorial tower was added in 2000. It has since been designated as a cultural relics protection unit of Guizhou Province.
