Jiapu Scenic Area

Jiapu Scenic Area is located in Jiapu Village, Bairu Town, on the lower reaches of the Pingzhou River, covering an area of 45.1 square kilometers with 20 scenic spots, including the Yaojia River Gorge, Desert River, Niuzhi Peak, Yangjiao Cave, Jiapu Waterfall, Nine Dragons Playing in Water, Qingtian Garden, Bamboo Stream, Nine-Turn Sharp Bend, Laqi Gorge, and Swallow Cave. The scenic area is characterized mainly by waterfalls, bamboo forests and gorges, karst caves, sandy beaches, river bends, and subtropical southern landscapes. It is a rare destination in Guizhou for science, culture, tourism, and leisure.

1. Jiapu Waterfall

Located on the left side of Lamazhai Village in Jiapu, the waterfall is 40 meters wide and 37 meters high, graceful and elegant. Due to the uneven surface of the rock, the water forms multiple cascades that flow down crisscrossing like white silk or long satin ribbons. A poem praises it: “I suspect fairies weave white silk, which falls from the heavens.” The area around the waterfall is densely covered with lush bamboo and trees, creating a captivating scene. Biyun Pool: The first deep pool at the foot of the Jiapu Waterfall, shaped like a crescent moon, with exposed rocks along the edge and emerald-green water resembling a green jade. Lush trees frame the pool, highlighting its vibrant hues. Pearl Curtain: At the foot of the Jiapu Waterfall, water overflows from Biyun Pool over a 2-meter-wide, 25-degree-incline calcified rock surface before plunging vertically, resembling strings of pearls hanging upside down from the cliff. From afar or up close, it looks like a delicate curtain of translucent pearls. In front of the Pearl Curtain, the river channel is filled with green shrubs, and the water flows gently through them toward the Bamboo Stream. Nine Dragons Playing in Water: Located below Biyun Pool of the Jiapu Waterfall. Water overflows from a 2-meter-wide, 250-degree-incline rock layer, then flows shallow and clear beneath it, where nine interlacing calcified formations resemble nine white dragons playing in the water, utterly charming. Shuishan Forest: Located 20 meters below Biyun Pool of the Jiapu Waterfall. This “water forest” is a variation of local holly trees growing within flowing water—water flows over stone while trees grow in the water. Tree roots are exposed and tangled, while branches flourish lushly, making for a delightful experience as visitors walk among them, touching trees and stepping on waves.

2. Qingyi Garden

Located upstream of the Jiapu Waterfall, it covers an area of 500 square meters and is filled with lush bamboo, clear streams, birdsong, and floral scents, offering a serene and picturesque landscape. “Hidden streams flow through flower paths, while a gentle breeze fills the bamboo grove” is an apt depiction of this garden. Jiaomeng Cave: About 100 meters from Qingyi Garden, this cave consists of three branching passages, extending 350–800 meters in depth. The narrow, mysterious cave features strange rocks and an enigmatic ambiance.

3. Bamboo Stream

Located downstream of the Jiapu Waterfall, tall and dense thorny bamboo crisscrosses to form a natural canopy, shading the small stream beneath. Whether boating or strolling, one is surrounded by emerald waves, rustling bamboo, and an elegant, tranquil, and refreshing green scenery that is truly enchanting.

4. Nine-Turn Sharp Bend

Situated along a 7-kilometer stretch of river between Yanzi Cave and Laqi Village in Jiapu, the water here is calm with a slow current and winding bends. Along both banks, thorny bamboo grows in dense clusters, while Buyi villages nestle against mountains and rivers, creating a picturesque harmony between rural life and fields. The river water is crystal-clear, reflecting the serene green surroundings, with thorny bamboo and banana forests complementing each other—embodying the rich charm of the southern landscape.

5. Laqi Gorge

Located downstream of the Nine-Turn Sharp Bend, this 3-kilometer-long gorge is about 60 meters wide. Steep cliffs rise on both sides, with hanging stalactites and stalagmites in uniquely shaped formations. The cliffs reach nearly 40 meters in height, with native vegetation covering the rock faces and evergreen vine bamboos visible everywhere.

6. Bagong River Valley

Located downstream of Laqi Gorge, this 4-kilometer-long valley features layered peaks and steep mountains densely covered with lush forests. The river water is crystal-clear with visible fish. The riverbed is paved with fine sand and pebbles, allowing the water to flow gently across the wide expanse. At river bends near cliffs, the water takes on a sapphire-blue hue, while the sandy beaches on both banks are clean, surrounded by fragrant grass and thriving trees.

7. Swallow Cave

Located in Doubi Village, Jiapu, it is the underground exit of the Jiapu River. The cave entrance is 100 meters high and 40 meters wide, extending 650 meters deep. The cave has a round ceiling with two vertical walls forming sheer cliffs, divided into an upper dry cave (Yang Cave) and a lower water cave (Yin Cave). Inside, there are numerous stalactites and small waterfalls, creating beautiful scenery. In spring, thousands of swallows gather inside, flying back and forth while chirping incessantly.

8. Yaojia River Gorge

Stretching 15 kilometers, the gorge features steep cliffs and overlapping peaks on both sides, with dense native vegetation. The river in the valley: in calm sections, the water is clear blue, reflecting surrounding peaks for a stunning view; at rapids, the water surges violently with roaring sounds that shake the soul. The cliffs along the banks host many karst caves, giving the entire gorge a wild and pristine atmosphere. Niuzhi Peak: located in the dry river section of Yaojia River. The dry river valley is flanked by shady trees and towering white cliffs, with two unique peaks facing each other across the river, resembling the Cowherd and Weaver Girl separated by the Milky Way. This area is sparsely populated, covered with dense native vegetation, filled with birdsong, and exudes a primitive and adventurous vibe. Yangjiao Cave: situated in the middle of a high cliff along the Yaojia River Gorge. The cave entrance is semi-circular, 30 meters high, 50 meters wide, and about 3,500 meters deep. The interior is 15–30 meters high and 20–50 meters wide, making it one of the larger karst caves in Pingtang County. The entrance is strategically located with steep cliffs above and below, easy to defend but hard to attack. The cavern is spacious enough to shelter thousands of people and has historically served as an important fortress. Naliao Cave: located in the middle of a peak cliff to the left of Xincun Village, Naliao Village, Zhemi Town. The cave extends about 1,500 meters, with a height of 10–20 meters and width of 15–30 meters. There are branch caves within the main one, adding to its mysterious depth. After 800 meters, there is a pool 15 meters wide and 100 meters long, with pure, transparent water. The cave is densely filled with uniquely shaped stalactites, creating a magical and spectacular sight.

9. Lamazhai Ethnic Village

Under the jurisdiction of Bairu Town, this is a Buyi ethnic village built along the mountains and river. The wooden houses are mostly two-story structures, with banana and bamboo clusters growing around them—an archetypal subtropical ethnic settlement. Ancient stone mills, stone grinders, stone mortars, and the unique handicraft of handmade papermaking are still preserved here.
