Cliff Inscription by Zhang Chong Zhang Chong, styled Zi Yi and also known as He Lou, was a successful candidate in the imperial examinations of the 32nd year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty (1553 AD), serving as an official in the Ministry of Justice. Due to persecution by Yan Song and his son, he was demoted to Duyun in the 37th year of Jiajing (1558). He lectured there for eight years and built the He Lou Academy on East Mountain. In the 40th year of Jiajing, he inscribed the cursive-script phrase “The sentiments of benevolence and wisdom, the principles of movement and stillness…" on the shaded rock face of East Mountain.
