Pingyao Catholic Church

Pingyao Catholic Church, also known as Pingyao Chengguan Catholic Church, is a Catholic church located at No. 2 Anjia Street in the southeast corner of Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, China. It currently belongs to the Yuci Diocese (Jinzhong Diocese). The church was established in the second year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1910), on a site that was formerly the Wudao Temple. Originally built in a European classical architectural style (Late Romanesque style) as a brick-and-wood structure, it faces west with its entrance to the east. The front façade features three tiers: the church sanctuary on the ground level, a music hall in the middle, and a bell tower at the top.

Pingyao Catholic Church — this uniquely styled building stands out prominently within the ancient city, which is predominantly characterized by Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. This shows that apart from having countless Buddhist followers, Shanxi also has a sizable Catholic congregation.

The church is located on Anjia Street, right next to the Confucius Temple, and can be reached by the scenic area’s electric shuttle bus. The church itself is not large — just a single room with a courtyard outside. There's a small pavilion at the church entrance housing a white marble saint statue. It’s a quiet spot with few visitors and no entrance fee.
