Miao Shiming Newspaper Collection Museum

The Miao Shiming Newspaper Collection Museum serves as a science education base.

I. On June 29, 1998, the Miao Shiming Family Newspaper Collection Museum held its opening ceremony and was opened to the public. Covering an area of 220 square meters with an investment of 1 million yuan, the museum houses five exhibition halls and is regarded as the premier newspaper collection museum in North China. Since its opening, it has voluntarily received over 60,000 visitors from all walks of life.

II. On December 18, 1998, the Shanxi Provincial Education Commission designated the museum as a “Shanxi Provincial Moral Education Base.”

III. On May 21, 2001, the museum’s collection achievements were recorded in the Guinness World Records. Miao Shiming became the first Chinese newspaper collector to be featured in the Guinness Book of World Records.

IV. On December 15, 2003, the Miao Shiming Newspaper Collection Museum opened to the public in the ancient city of Pingyao. Covering an area of 2,000 square meters with an investment of over 5 million yuan, the museum features twelve exhibition halls and is part of the “One-Ticket Access” attraction series within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pingyao Ancient City. It pioneered the industrialization of newspaper collection culture in China and even the world, and is regarded as the premier private newspaper collection museum in China. Since its opening, it has welcomed over 10 million domestic and international visitors.

V. On December 15, 2003, the Shanxi Provincial Association for Science and Technology designated the museum as a “Shanxi Provincial Science Education Base.”

VI. On December 20, 2003, the Newspaper Collectors Branch of the China Newspaper Association named the museum the only “National Model Excellent Family Newspaper Collection Museum” in the country.

VII. On June 29, 2008, with approval from the Shanxi Provincial Press and Publication Bureau, the museum published the inaugural issue of the Miao Shiming Newspaper Collection Museum Pictorial. The full-color, glossy-printed magazine in international size spans sixty pages and is divided into twelve exhibition sections (themes), showcasing the museum’s rare and precious newspaper collections, resembling a traveling newspaper museum.

VIII. From September 2009 to June 2011, on the occasions of the 60th anniversary of the founding of New China, the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, and the 10th Chinese Journalists’ Day, six special exhibitions were held in Beijing, Taiyuan, Jinzhong, and other locations, reaching an audience of over 300,000 people. Visiting the exhibitions were leaders including members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Secretaries of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, the Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, as well as officials from provincial, municipal, and county governments.

IX. On December 11, 2009, the China Association for Science and Technology designated the museum as a “National Science Education Base.”

X. On April 24, 2010, the Miao Shiming Newspaper Collection Museum was awarded the highest honor of “Five-Star Chinese Newspaper Collecting Home” in the “Double Hundred Project” selection event organized by the Newspaper Collectors Branch of the China Newspaper Association.
