Confucius Temple

The Confucius Temple is located on the south side of the middle section of Wenhua Road in Chengguan Town. It was first built in the fifth year of the Kangxi reign (1666) and has been rebuilt and renovated multiple times since. It was reconstructed during the Tongzhi era. The temple faces south and is oriented north. It stretches 169 meters from north to south and 47.5 meters from east to west, covering an area of 8,027.5 square meters, with a built-up area of 2,586 square meters. It consists of structures such as a memorial archway, the Lingxing Gate, the Dacheng Gate, the Tianzi Platform, the Dacheng Hall, and the Chongsheng Shrine. The surviving structures include the Lingxing Gate and the Dacheng Hall. The Lingxing Gate is a four-pillar, three-bay, three-story structure, with the central plaque inscribed in relief with the characters “Lingxing Gate,” the left plaque inscribed “Golden Sound,” and the right plaque inscribed “Jade Chime.” The gate is 5.41 meters high and 22.5 meters wide. The Dacheng Hall has a five-bay frontage, with a total width of 18.25 meters and a depth of 9.16 meters, featuring a flush-gable roof covered with green tiles. The crossbeams are adorned with bas-reliefs depicting the Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea and dragon-phoenix patterns. The hall displays four plaques inscribed with “Model Teacher for All Ages,” “Since the Birth of Mankind There Has Been None,” “Equal to Heaven and Earth,” and “The Sage Who Perfected Wisdom.” The Confucius Stele is made of white cotton stone. It has a square top, is 3.25 meters high, 1.08 meters wide, and 0.25 meters thick. The top is inscribed with seven characters: “Praise to Confucius, the Supreme Sage and First Teacher.” It was carved during the Tongzhi era. The Four Disciples’ Praise Steles (Yan, Zeng, Si, and Meng) are also made of white cotton stone. All four steles have square tops and feature regular script inscriptions in relief praising Yan Hui, Zeng Shen, Zi Si, and Mencius respectively. They were carved during the Tongzhi era.
