Fengqi Mountain, originally named Fengqi Mountain, is located on the western side of Tianzi Mountain in the mid-low mountainous area of Chongzhou, Sichuan. It earned its name due to the resemblance of its rocks to the head of a phoenix. Adjacent to the Jiulonggou Scenic Area, the mountain is serene with lush forests and birds chirping melodiously, as if harmonizing with the phoenix’s cry. Historically, it was one of the 108 scenic spots of Mount Qingcheng and has long been known as a place where “dragons hide and phoenixes nest.” It is a scenic area rich in both natural and cultural landscapes. Within the area, an ancient temple originally built in the Sui Dynasty and rebuilt in the Tang Dynasty holds a special status in Chinese Buddhist monasteries and is hailed as the “Foremost in Western Sichuan.” The western part of the Fengqi Mountain Nature Reserve is larger in area with scattered attractions. Halfway up the mountain lies a courtyard built by Xiang Wang, the leader of the Tujia uprising army, commonly known as the Xiang Family Courtyard, though only ruins remain today. Opposite the mountain rises another peak, steep and rugged, visible for dozens of miles. Legend says Xiang Wang once set up a watch post here to observe the enemy, hence the name Haozi Mountain, also called Haozi Valley. Other main attractions in the area include Quzi Reciting Poetry, Tianzi Well, Chaplin Rock, and Lonely Sister with Her Umbrella.

It gets its name from a rock in the mountain that resembles the head of a phoenix. The rock is dark brown, covered with green trees and bamboo, with a pointed stone at the top resembling a phoenix’s beak. The lush vegetation spreads out like an emerald-green phoenix tail, creating a marvelous and lifelike form that seems ready to take flight. Fengqi Mountain features many caves, dense forests, and beautiful peaks, full of pristine wild charm.
