Chengdu Sport University

Founded in 1942, Chengdu Sport University originated as the Sichuan Provincial Sports Specialized School. In 1950, it was taken over by the People’s Government and renamed Chengdu Sports Specialized School. In 1953, it was fully incorporated as the Southwest Sports Institute, and in 1956, it was renamed to its current title. The university was originally under the administration of the General Administration of Sport of China. In 2001, it was transferred to local governance and is now jointly run by the General Administration of Sport of China and the People’s Government of Sichuan Province, with the latter taking the lead in management. It is a full-time regular higher education institution. The university covers a total area of 480,000 square meters, located in central Chengdu, Sichuan Province, adjacent to the world-renowned historical site Wuhou Shrine. With an elegant environment and well-organized infrastructure, the university’s sports training venues, teaching and research laboratories, equipment, library resources, and related public service facilities adequately support academic development and talent cultivation. Upholding the motto “Persevere in Vigorous Endeavors and Build Strength through Accumulation,” the university is committed to survival through quality, development through distinctiveness, branding through disciplines, and competitiveness through faculty. It has developed a distinctive educational approach characterized by “a focus on sports, integration with medicine, and combination with liberal arts.” After more than 70 years of development, the university has become a prestigious sports institution in Southwest China with extensive national influence. Currently, it is striving toward its goal of becoming a high-level applied research university with distinctive sports features and well-coordinated multidisciplinary development.

The university currently has over 9,000 full-time undergraduates and more than 1,100 doctoral and master's students. There are over 1,200 faculty and staff members, including more than 600 full-time teachers, over 240 with senior titles, over 270 with mid-level titles, and around 100 international and national-level referees and athletes. The university has produced many renowned experts and scholars in the field of sports, including former heads of the Sports Discipline Evaluation Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, experts of the National Social Science Fund Project Evaluation Group, talents of the Ministry of Education’s New Century Program, academic and technical leaders of the General Administration of Sport of China, recipients of the State Council Special Allowance, members of the National Higher Education Physical Education Teaching Guidance Committee, members of the National Sports Master's Professional Degree Education Guidance Committee, academic and technical leaders of Sichuan Province, outstanding experts with significant contributions in Sichuan, distinguished teaching faculty in Sichuan, famous traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in Sichuan, over 70 doctoral supervisors, and more than 40 visiting and part-time professors from both China and abroad.

As a doctoral degree-granting institution, the university currently comprises five colleges (Football College, Sports Medicine and Health College, Graduate School, Continuing Education College, and Wushu College), eight departments (Department of Physical Education and Training I, Department of Physical Education and Training II, Department of Physical Education and Training III, Department of Economics and Management, Department of Journalism, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Art, and Department of Leisure Sports), as well as the Teaching Department of Ideological and Political Theory Courses, Affiliated Secondary Sports School, and Affiliated Competitive Sports School, totaling 16 teaching units. It also includes four research and teaching institutions: the Institute of Sports History, the Institute of Sports Medicine and Health, the Zheng Huaijian Orthopedic Research Institute, and the Zheng Huaijian Martial Arts Research Institute. Primarily offering undergraduate education, the university provides 18 undergraduate majors across seven major disciplines: education, medicine, literature, management, economics, science, and art. Among these, four majors have been approved by the Ministry of Education as Characteristic Majors in Higher Education Institutions, seven are Sichuan Provincial Characteristic Undergraduate Majors, and three are Sichuan Provincial Undergraduate Talent Cultivation Bases. The university holds a first-level doctoral degree authorization in Sports Science, and first-level master’s degree authorizations in Sports Science, Clinical Medicine, Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and Journalism and Communication. It also offers 12 second-level master’s degree programs, along with three professional master’s degree categories in Sports, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Journalism and Communication.
