Early Buildings of Sichuan University

The early buildings of Sichuan University are designated as Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

The early buildings of Sichuan University include the historic architectural complex of Huaxi Campus and the First Administrative Building of Sichuan University. The historic architectural complex of Huaxi Campus comprises eight buildings: the Administration Building, the First Teaching Building (Cadbury Hall), the Second Teaching Building (Sutcliffe Memorial Hall), the Fourth Teaching Building (Hodgson Court), the Fifth Teaching Building (College of Education), the Sixth Teaching Building (Wandemen Mingtang Academy), the Old Library (Maudsley Hall), and the Bell Tower.

Huide Hall is the oldest building among these key heritage sites of Sichuan University. Construction began in 1915 and was completed in 1919. It was donated by the Rockefeller Foundation in New York in memory of Bai Huaimin. Built with a brick-and-wood structure, the building's exterior features elements of traditional Chinese classical architecture. Cadbury Hall, Sutcliffe Memorial Hall, Hodgson Court, the College of Education, and Wandemen Mingtang Academy were all designed by foreign architects, featuring a blend of Chinese and Western styles in their brick-and-wood construction. These buildings offer a comfortable environment year-round and combine classical Chinese aesthetics with Western architectural characteristics, forming a striking feature of the Sichuan University campus.

In May 2013, the early buildings of Sichuan University were announced as part of the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

1. Sichuan University Administration Building

Protected Area: 20 meters beyond the outer edge of the building foundation.

Building Control Zone: 20 meters beyond the protected area.

2. Historic Architectural Complex of Sichuan University Huaxi Campus

Protected Area: 20 meters beyond the outer edge of the foundations of the following buildings: the Administration Building (Office Building), the Old Library (Maudsley Hall), the Bell Tower, the First Teaching Building (Biology Building), the Second Teaching Building (Chemistry Building), the Fourth Teaching Building (Hodgson Court), the Fifth Teaching Building (College of Education), and the Sixth Teaching Building (Wandemen).

Building Control Zone: 20 meters beyond the protected area.
