Alpine Rhododendron Forest

In the shady mountain slopes and alpine fir forests of the Ganhaizi Scenic Area, there is an alpine rhododendron forest covering approximately 1,500 hectares. Most of the trees are mid-aged to mature, over a hundred years old, with an average diameter at breast height of about 15 centimeters. The main species include small-leaf rhododendron and large-leaf rhododendron, with tree heights ranging from 0.5 to 4 meters.

In late April and early May each year, when the snow has not yet completely melted and the mountaintops remain covered in white, the alpine rhododendrons bloom in clusters all over the valleys and slopes, carpeting the entire area in a spectacular display. Their stems lie horizontally, branches rise obliquely, and their flowers are milky white or pale yellow—delicate, vibrant, and glistening as they sway and stand firm against the cold winds, exuding boundless vitality. Together with the nearby lingering snow and the silver world atop the mountains, they form a harmonious and picturesque scene, becoming the earliest harbingers of spring in the Lotus Sea and the most magnificent landscape. The alpine rhododendron is one of the main ornamental plants in the upper part of the Lotus Sea Park, holding significant scientific and economic value for species conservation, ecological balance maintenance, and further research on the cold resistance of rhododendron plants. Some of the earliest spring hikers, standing before these vast clusters of alpine rhododendrons, are filled with awe, praising the tenacious spirit and remarkable vitality of these high-mountain flowers.
