In the summer of 1980, - , the chief architect of China's reform and opening-up and then Vice Chairman of the 0 Central Committee, visited Mount Emei for an inspection. When he reached Shuangshuijing, the then-endpoint of the scenic area road, he took a short rest there. Climbing to a high point and looking into the distance, faced with the beautiful scenery of Mount Emei, - was full of vigor and enthusiasm as he pointed out the landscape and said: “Mount Emei is a cultural-type scenic area, a treasure house. It must be well protected, well planned, and comprehensively developed; infrastructure must be strengthened, management improved. In carrying out our work, we must have the spirit of climbing ever onward.” To commemorate this great man, the Deng Xiaoping Mountain-Climbing Memorial Pavilion was built here, consisting of memorial sites such as the Commemorative Monument, Deep Fish-Water Affection, Pointing to the Vast Land, and Climbing Ever Onward.
