Located at the foot of Mount Emei, Dafo Chan Temple serves as the first gateway for pilgrims visiting the sacred mountain. It is the ideal starting point for those seeking blessings and spiritual fulfillment on Mount Emei, and a must-visit destination. Originally named Dafo Temple, it is situated in the eastern suburbs of Emeishan City. The temple is easily accessible, boasts a grand and majestic atmosphere, and features a meticulously structured architectural complex with multiple main halls and numerous meditation rooms.

Temples on Mount Emei have very little commercial atmosphere—no one will try to persuade you to donate money, buy incense, or purchase souvenirs. Originally named Dafo Temple (also commonly known as Dafo Hall), the temple was first established on its current site in the eastern suburbs of Emeishan City during the Ming Dynasty by the infinite national master, and took 15 years to complete. Covering an area of over 300 acres, the temple complex includes multiple main halls and more than 140 meditation rooms. The Great Compassion Hall enshrines a 12-meter-tall bronze statue of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin. Empress Dowager Cisheng, the mother of Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty, bestowed the name “Dafo Temple” upon the temple in recognition of this.

On December 14, 2008, the consecration ceremony and completion celebration of Dafo Chan Temple on Mount Emei were held, officially opening the temple to the public. Covering an area of over 400 acres with a built-up area of 56,000 square meters, the temple serves as the first gateway for pilgrims to Mount Emei, and is one of Asia’s largest Ten Directions Monasteries. It has become a supreme spiritual practice ground integrating monastic education, specialized practice and certification, Buddhist studies research, and compassionate service to all beings.
