Guomo Monastery in Aba County

Located beside the Ajiu Highway in Tangmai Village, Guomo Township, northwest of Aba County, Sichuan Province, this ancient Tibetan Buddhist Gelug sect temple is 13 kilometers from the county town, covering an area of 18,000 square meters. It is a Gelug sect monastery that practices both exoteric and esoteric Buddhism. It is known for its grand temple architecture, large stupa, and mysterious Tibetan secrets. The annual average temperature is 2.6°C, and it is 518 km from the provincial capital Chengdu and 259 km from Barkam.

Also known as Huizhuan Monastery, Guomo Monastery is one of the three major Gelug sect monasteries in Aba Prefecture and a branch of the Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of the Yellow Hat sect. Built in the 56th year of the Qianlong reign (1790), it was established by the great lama Gongquedeqing of Labrang Monastery following the will of the second Jamyang Zhepa. Originally named Faxiang Temple, it has a history of over 200 years. Guomo Monastery is built on a vast grassland with exquisite and luxurious architecture. Beside the monastery is the Guomo Monastery Exoteric and Esoteric Studies Institute.

Aba Prefecture enjoys a mild climate with distinct seasons. The northern part has a quasi-south subtropical monsoon humid climate; the southern mountainous region features climates ranging from mid-subtropical and north subtropical to south temperate and north temperate zones, characterized by a mountainous vertical climate. The annual average temperature ranges from 17.1°C to 18.5°C, with annual precipitation between 748.4 and 1184.2 mm, sunshine duration of 1200–1400 hours, and a frost-free period of 300–358 days. The land is fertile and rich in produce, exhibiting the spring-blooming, summer-vibrant, autumn-harvesting, and winter-elegant charm typical of the Jiangnan region.
