DePu Temple

DePu Temple is located in Dege Township, Aba County, Sichuan Province, China. It is a major monastery of the Sakya sect, built in 1844 by the Fourth DePu Rinpoche, and over the generations has produced many highly accomplished masters who are widely praised. The temple features a large Buddha hall, in the central shrine of which stands a large statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, who grants liberation upon sight, surrounded by statues of the Five Founding Masters of Sakya, the Six Ornaments and Two Excellent Ones of Sakya, the Sixteen Arhats,

as well as numerous wooden carvings of Buddhist deities larger than life-size, such as the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. There are also many exquisitely crafted bronze statues, including the Maitreya Buddha statue known for its meaningful gaze upon sight, the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara recently brought from Nepal, and the golden statue of the White Umbrella Deity. Additionally, there is a rich collection of thangka paintings, primarily featuring two complete sets of the Buddha’s Jataka tales (nine paintings per set), along with many other new and old thangkas. The tantric scripture hall was built in 1903 and remains well-preserved to this day. It is quite rare to see a hall adorned with such an abundance of gold, silver, and wood carvings. Inside the hall is a naturally formed Eleven-Faced Avalokiteshvara statue concealed within the statue of Avalokiteshvara that was brought from Jiarong Chuo Si Jia, making it an especially sacred object.
