Drum Tower Mountain is situated at the junction of "one county and two districts" (Hejiang County, Jiangyang District, and Naxi District), stretching 8 kilometers in length, 2 to 6 kilometers in width, and encircling approximately 20 kilometers. Dominated by red sand Danxia landforms, it features a subtropical humid monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 17°C, altitudes ranging from 720m to 786m, and annual precipitation of 1200mm. With about 350 frost-free days and a forest coverage rate of 70%, the mountain towers majestically into the clouds from afar, presenting a spectacular and imposing landscape. Its shape resembles a drum, with overlapping ridges and layers. The surrounding cliffs and precipices of crimson rock formations are nearly impassable, except for five winding paths leading up the mountain. The cliffs are towering and unscalable, and at the mountain’s entrance, three passes—including Shuangsuoguan—block the way, creating a uniquely rugged terrain. Historically, it was said to have "three temples and five strongholds," and has long been a strategic military stronghold.

In the 17th year of the Chongzhen Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1644), Zhang Xianzhong led rebel forces into Sichuan and personally set foot on Drum Tower Mountain. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Li Zicheng also led troops into the mountain, as recorded in the inscriptions of Gaofeng Temple. In 1950, during the campaign to suppress bandits on Drum Tower Mountain, the 15th and 16th Armies of the People's Liberation Army, along with local forces, attacked the mountain and eliminated nearly 10,000 bandits, thus making the mountain widely renowned. The mountain is covered with well-preserved vegetation, displaying vibrant flowers and colorful forests in all seasons, offering unique landscapes that evoke a sense of ancient simplicity, freshness, and pristine nature. It has long been known as the "Home of Colorful Forests." The mountain boasts numerous scenic spots, well-distributed across the east, west, south, and north. These include the Drum Tower Pavilion, the Three Passes, the Five Strongholds, the Shame-Exposing Rock, the Ancient Stone Taiping, stone stalagmites, Star Cliff, the ruins of temple foundations, cliff inscriptions, the Eight Immortals Spring, Nie Long Bidding Farewell to His Ancestors, the Folk Resort, Phoenix Garden, Gaofeng Temple, Baiyun Temple, Drum Tower Temple, Yuntai Temple, Yongfeng Temple, Jade Emperor Temple, ancient forts and temples, landlord manors, chastity tombs, the historic battlefield of bandit suppression, and more. The mountain’s architecture is elegant, with exquisite sculptures. The area is mainly inhabited by descendants of the Miao and Yi ethnic groups, whose unique folk customs and lifestyles include traditions such as the Lusheng matchmaking ceremony, Lusheng dance festivals, and Lusheng competitions that have been passed down to this day, showcasing distinctive styles. Local folk songs and yangge singing duets are also highlights, offering endless charm.

Xian’e Lake is located at the southeastern end of Drum Tower Mountain, covering hundreds of acres with emerald-green waters. The lake is dotted with small islands, creating a captivating scenery. On sunny days, taking a bamboo raft across the lake reveals gentle ripples, a seamless blend of water and sky, reflections of bamboo houses, and seagulls soaring overhead, evoking deep nostalgia. The lakeside is lush with pine and fir trees, expansive pear orchards, and habitats for white cranes. Mandarin ducks, azaleas, and thrushes are found all over the mountains. Ancient houses are tucked among the scenery, offering a taste of wild mountain charm. At sunset, when the evening glow paints the sky, thousands of birds sing in chorus by the lake, producing melodious sounds—a remarkable spectacle of Drum Tower Mountain. Due to its high-altitude location, the lake enjoys a cold climate and is abundant in cold-water fish, which are delicious and considered a delicacy of the mountain.
