The National Protection War Museum

The National Protection War Memorial Hall is based on the provincial-level cultural relic protection site “Former Site of the Command Post of the Cotton Slope Battlefield during the National Protection War” (originally known as the Tao Family Courtyard), showcasing the grand history of the National Protection War. It bears witness to the heroic years of defending the nation with unyielding resolve and the loyal hearts of the people of Yunxi, while also displaying the traditional culture of residential architecture in southern Sichuan.

In December 1915, Yuan Shikai betrayed democracy and the republic by announcing the restoration of the imperial system. Cai E, Tang Jiyao, Li Liejun, and others initiated an uprising in Yunnan and dispatched troops to fight against Yuan.

In March 1916, the frontline command post of the National Protection Army led by Cai E and Zhu De was set up in the east flower hall of the Tao Family Courtyard. In June, General Cai E held a victory celebration conference at Dazhouyi and inscribed the “National Protection Rock Inscription” on a huge cliff by the Yongning River. The land of Naxi was filled with the revolutionary fervor of the heroes of the National Protection War, and it also preserved their invaluable spiritual legacy. To promote the “National Protection” spirit and inherit the culture of Naxi, in the spring of 2012, the CPC Luzhou Municipal Committee Naxi District Committee and the District People’s Government restored the original appearance of the Tao Family Courtyard and established it as the National Protection War Memorial Hall. The site includes the main exhibition hall of the National Protection War, the Cotton Slope Battle exhibition hall, the Cai E exhibition hall, the Zhu De exhibition hall, the exhibition hall of Chinese people supporting the National Protection War, a film and video hall, as well as exhibition halls on Naxi humanities and folk culture.
