Shenlongwan Village is located at the southeastern border of Shanxi, on the boundary between Shanxi and Henan, at the source of the Taihang Grand Canyon. The area boasts beautiful natural ecology, stunning landscapes, and unique folk customs. In the past, the region was characterized by high mountains, steep slopes, winding roads, and abundant rocks, making the natural environment harsh. To facilitate travel, people carved a narrow path along a cliff about a hundred zhang high, consisting of ninety-nine switchbacks and more than 1,800 steps. Climbing it was extremely strenuous, and the exertion caused people to pant “hā lóu, hā lóu,” leading to its vivid nickname, the “Hā Ladder.” In sharp contrast today is the newly built cliffside highway. Stretching 1,526 meters in length with 35 skylights, it was drilled through the mountain, situated in a perilous mountain ridge, twisting and turning like a giant serpent hanging in the mountains. This road has completely transformed the appearance of the ancient village.

For travelers from Beijing: Jingda Expressway (Datong Exit) – Er’guang Expressway (Changzhi Exit) – Changping Expressway (Pingshun Exit) – then drive about 30 kilometers southeast to reach the scenic area. 3. For travelers from Hebei: Jingkun Expressway (Xiaodian Exit) – Er’guang Expressway (Changzhi Exit) – Changping Expressway (Pingshun Exit) – then drive about 30 kilometers southeast to reach the scenic area.

Travel Tips: The construction of the climbing ladder in Shenlongwan Scenic Area was as arduous as that of the tunnel through the mountain. Walking it is thrilling, so please stay safe and pay attention to the signs.
