Chongqing Science and Technology Museum

The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a base for science education.

The Chongqing Science and Technology Museum is one of the ten key social and cultural infrastructure projects identified by the Chongqing Municipal Committee and the Municipal Government as priority initiatives for the city. It serves as a modern, comprehensive, and multifunctional venue for large-scale public science education and outreach activities. The museum is a foundational facility for implementing the “Revitalize Chongqing through Science and Education” strategy and for improving the scientific and cultural literacy of its citizens.

Located in the core area of the Jiangbeizui Central Business District (CBD) where the Yangtze River and the Jialing River meet, the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum was founded on January 7, 2006, construction began in October of the same year, and it officially opened to the public on September 9, 2009. The museum covers an area of 37 mu, with a total floor space of 45,300 square meters (including 30,000 square meters dedicated to exhibitions and educational purposes), and a total investment of 567 million yuan (including 400 million yuan for building and installation works, and 167 million yuan for exhibition projects).

The exterior of the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum combines stone and glass materials. The exterior stone features multiple overlapping colors, resembling hard rock and symbolizing “mountains”; the glass curtain wall, which accounts for 60% of the exterior and spans nearly 10,000 square meters, is crystal clear and transparent, symbolizing “water.” The sharp edges of the stone and the transparency of the glass aptly reflect Chongqing’s identity as a “mountain-water city.” The museum is divided into Zone A and Zone B. The highest point of Zone A reaches approximately 57 meters, while the lowest is about 24 meters, giving it the appearance of a giant “fan-shaped crystal palace” when viewed from above, with a grand and majestic design.

With the theme of “Life · Society · Innovation,” the museum features six thematic exhibition halls: Life Science and Technology, Disaster Prevention Science and Technology, Transportation Science and Technology, National Defense Science and Technology, Aerospace Science and Technology, and Basic Science. In addition, there are two special exhibition halls: Children’s Science Paradise and The Light of Industry. The exhibits span multiple disciplines including materials, machinery, transportation, military industry, aerospace, microelectronics technology, information and communication, computer applications, virtual simulation technology, life sciences, environmental sciences, basic sciences, and ancient Chinese science and technology, totaling over 400 pieces (sets).

Guided by the goal of achieving “international advancement, domestic excellence, and Chongqing characteristics,” the Chongqing Science and Technology Museum carries out public science education activities through means such as science and education exhibitions, scientific experiments, and technology training. The museum team is continuously working to refine and expand the functionality of the venue, aiming to make it “a platform for experiencing the wonders of science, a hall for inspiring innovative thinking, a window for showcasing technological achievements, and a bastion for delivering science education.”

Opening hours are from 9:30 to 17:00 every Tuesday to Sunday. Closed on Mondays (except national statutory holidays).
