South Korea Shopping Season Kicks Off on January 11th – Ride Free Buses to Shop & Save

Travelers who love visiting Korea and shopping will be excited to know that the “2013 Korea Shopping Season” will run from January 11th to February 28th. Spanning 49 days, the event includes cities such as Seoul, Busan, Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeju. It brings together over 24,700 participating merchants, including department stores, duty-free shops, hotels, large supermarkets, and convenience stores—making it the largest shopping festival in history. Foreign tourists can enjoy discounts of 10% to 70% and a variety of shopping promotions. Additionally, free shuttle buses run twice daily on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays between Gangbuk and Gangnam, allowing visitors to freely shop around areas like Itaewon, Myeongdong, and Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong.

Popular department stores such as Galleria, Lotte Department Store, Shinsegae Department Store, and Hyundai Department Store, along with duty-free shops like Dongwha, Lotte, Shilla, Walkerhill, and the Korea Tourism Organization, shopping malls like Dongdaemun Doota and Hello apM, as well as premium outlet centers at Gimpo International Airport, Yeoju, and Paju, various tourism-related facilities, and performances are all part of this shopping season. The highly acclaimed “One More Night Promotion” (stay an extra night for free) has been expanded to 50 designated nationwide hotels this year, and also includes benefits such as dining discounts and complimentary access to hotel facilities.

 

To help foreign tourists better engage with the various activities of the shopping season, the event hub—KEB PLAZA in front of the Woori Bank headquarters in Myeongdong, Seoul—will provide event information, interpretation services in Chinese, English, and Japanese, welcome gifts, the Big Chance prize draw, a K-pop celebrity photo zone, and other convenient services. Additionally, there will be weekly themed events, including Myeongdong Week to experience Seoul’s shopping and tourism hub, Fashion Week where visitors can become style stars, Beauty Week to try out K-pop star-inspired makeup, Food Week to savor delicious Korean cuisine, and finally, Entertainment Week for unforgettable fun.

During the shopping season, free shuttle buses will run twice a week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays—departing at 9:10 AM and 1:30 PM—between Gangbuk and Gangnam. The routes pass through Itaewon with its exotic flair, Myeongdong bustling with beauty shops, Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong featuring charming cafes and fashion boutiques, Apgujeong and Cheongdam known for daytime luxury shopping and vibrant nightlife, and COEX Mall where you can enjoy both shopping and culture. In addition, there will be Gyeonggi-do tour buses that take just one hour from Seoul to visit well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites and the fun-filled Everland theme park. The K-shuttle also makes it easier and more enjoyable to explore the diverse attractions across Korea.
